Connection
One of the reasons I love grappling so much is because of the feeling you get from the positional flow. Being able to get connected and stay conncected with your opponent through balance, movement and timing. This is actually why the triangle symbol is so relevant in jiu-jitsu. You see it on many logos and t-shirts. The triangle is a symbol for balance, movment and timing. These three things together make up something called aliveness. One of the reasons jiu-jitsu was originally considered so effective was because of its ability to practice in alive situations. Most martial arts where not really practiced that way at the time. In grappling, you should be trying to maintain connection through aliveness. When you get good at achieving such a connection through aliveness you will begin to feel something that can not be created any where else. The more connected you learn to be, the better you will be at controling and submitting your opponent. The idea of position before submisson does not mean that you have to achieve a "check point" position like the mount before you can submit your opponent. It means that you have to establish some sort of dominance or control. This could be from anywhere! It could be under side control or from the turtle position, anywhere! Proper connection allows for advancement. Where does connection start? It starts with the core. Good connection is about learning to follow and control with your hips. Once you devolope a good sense of feel and movement with your hips, the rest of your body will fall into place.
