RIE Results
Well as it turns out we had a rough night in Philly. After Joey’s big win last Saturday in the UWC, he lost in a 1st round TKO last night in the RIE Event. His dude was a bit bigger and although Joey landed a few heavy strikes his opponent was not very phased and returned with some heavy strikes of his own. The fight was back and forth on the feet for the most part with Joey on his back a few times with one leg lock attempt. Eventually, Joey was knocked down as his opponent crowded over him and began to unleash the strikes on Joey’s guarded head till the referee stopped the match. One thing we learned in Joey’s fight is that he should definitely be fighting at 170 rather than 185. He is a small 185ver.
Jacob’s fight was an all out war with his opponent riding the top game for most of the fight. David Sachs who is the current Ring of Combat Champion proved to be a tough opponent. David was able to put Jacob on his back and work some aggressive ground and pound in his guard for the first round. Jacob landed some good shots from the bottom his self. The second round Jacob was put on his back again and a lot of this round was spent in the half guard as Sachs threw down some nice elbows, one of which opened a big cut under Jacobs eye. At some point in round 2, Jacob had a nice heel hook attempt which had the crowd screaming, but was unable to get the tap. Coming into round 3 Jacob had a nice gash under his eye and the round looked a lot like round 2 but this time Jacob had a nice guillotine attempt that rolled him to the top position and eventually back to his back again as David slipped out. David then began working his ground and pound and eventually got to Jacobs back and finished with a rear naked choke. As David was a very tough and aggressive opponent, I don’t believe that he was anymore talented. He has a bit more experience in the cage and is also sponsored to train full time. For this fight he was flown out to Florida to train full time with American Top Team.
What I think was the biggest factor in both of their fights was the intensity. All though we train these guys hard, I don’t think we train hard enough in the sense of hitting at 100%. What we need to make sure we do is get the proper gear so that they can train particularly ground and pound drills at 100% to get used to the intensity of someone trying to knock your block off without taking too much damage. There is a huge difference between 75% hit force and speed in training and 100% in the cage. They need to be able to train at 100% all the way up to 2 weeks or so before a fight so that their game can adapt to the intensity of a real fight. That’s my take on the evening and what we need to do to improve on our MMA Am/Pro fighter training program.
Lastly, although it was a rough night, I am well pleased with our fighters and as always give them much respect for getting in that cage, putting it on the line and representing the Clinch Academy with class. Be sure to congratulate them and encourage them to get back out there!!
